Major European gas network operators join forces to drive innovation

GRDF is partnering with Cadent and Italgas to accelerate the injection of Renewable Gases

GRDF is joining a major initiative today for the future of energy in Europe. Together with Italgas and Cadent, the two largest gas distribution operators in Italy and the United Kingdom, GRDF is co-founding the Green Gas Innovation Alliance (GGIA), an industry alliance dedicated to transforming energy networks to prepare for the accelerated development and injection of Renewable Gas and low-carbon gases

Together, the three partners operate nearly 500,000 kilometers of networks and serve approximately 35 million European customers. This cooperation marks a new step toward building a more resilient, low-carbon, and self-sufficient energy system.

Gas Networks: Essential infrastructure for integrating renewables

The Energy Transition relies on the large-scale development of renewables. For green and low-carbon gases—including Biomethane, Hydrogen, and Synthetic Gas—Gas Distribution Networks are a critical link.

Already present throughout the country, Gas Networks enable the collection, transportation, and distribution of increasingly decentralized renewable production. These infrastructures play a decisive role in integrating new energy molecules as close as possible to the sites of production and consumption.

The GGIA’s goal is precisely to develop technologies that will increase the networks’ capacity to accommodate growing volumes of Renewable Gases, while ensuring the highest levels of safety, performance, and service quality. The alliance’s work will focus in particular on technologies for Biomethane Injection, Hydrogen, and synthetic methane, as well as on systems for monitoring and analyzing gas quality.

Innovating to Build the Energy Networks of Tomorrow

Beyond the integration of Renewable Gases, the GGIA aims to accelerate the modernization of networks through the sharing of innovations and the development of joint solutions.

Smart sensors, infrastructure digitization, advanced monitoring, optimized asset management, and measurement and Interoperability systems are among the areas of collaboration identified by the three operators. These innovations will help transform the networks into increasingly smart Smart Grids capable of adapting in real time to the needs of the energy system.

The goal is clear: to make Gas Networks infrastructures that are fully integrated into the energy system of tomorrow, capable of supporting the complementary roles of electrification and renewable fuels on the path to Carbon Neutrality.

International Cooperation: A Catalyst for Decarbonization

In the face of climate and energy challenges, no single actor can act alone. This is the conviction behind this alliance: the transformation of the energy system requires close cooperation among European industries, technology companies, and countries.

“No single organization can achieve this on its own, no single technology will provide all the answers, and no country can lead this transformation in isolation. That is why collaboration is important. The future energy system will be based on a smart combination of electrons and molecules. Electrification will be essential, but Renewable Gas and low-carbon gases are also essential, as they play a crucial role in accelerating decarbonization and strengthening Europe’s energy resilience.”

Laurence Poirier-Dietz, CEO of GRDF

The creation of the GGIA will make it possible to pool lessons learned, launch joint pilot projects, identify the most promising innovations, and accelerate their large-scale deployment. By promoting knowledge sharing among European operators, the alliance will help reduce development times, optimize investments, and accelerate the rollout of the most effective solutions.

This collective effort should strengthen the role of networks as facilitators of the Energy Transition and support the development of Renewable Gases to help achieve Decarbonization in Europe.

A Shared Vision for Europe's Energy Future

Through the Green Gas Innovation Alliance, GRDF reaffirms its commitment to playing a leading role in the energy transition. By leveraging innovation, international cooperation, and the ongoing modernization of infrastructure, the alliance aims to create the conditions necessary for the injection of Renewable Gas and low-carbon gases, benefiting local communities, European competitiveness, and the fight against climate change.
